Tens of millions of SMS text messages are kept in a sizable database managed by TrueDialog, the majority of which were sent by companies to prospective clients.
Years' worth of text messages sent and received by its users were recorded in the database and processed by TrueDialog.
However, none of the data was encrypted and anyone could look inside because the database was left open on the internet without a password.
The database included data on job alerts, marketing messages from companies offering discounts, and applications for university financial aid.
