SpaceX: SpaceX rocket crashes into the moon as cyberattacks hit U.S. water systems

SpaceX Rocket Crash-Lands on the Moon, Raising Concerns for Future Lunar Missions

Early on August 5, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket’s upper stage roughly the size of a five-story building crashed into the moon after failing to reenter Earth’s atmosphere as intended. The impact, detected by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, created a plume lasting 5–10 minutes, though astronomers couldn’t observe it in real time due to its location on the moon’s far limb.

Launched in January 2025 to deliver two lunar landers, the rocket’s spent stage was left in an unstable Earth-moon orbit, where it was spotted by an amateur astronomer who predicted its collision. While the crash poses no threat to Earth, experts warn it highlights growing risks for future lunar infrastructure, including NASA’s planned nuclear reactor, factories, and permanent bases. Scientists are now analyzing the impact’s aftermath to better understand lunar surface dynamics, which could improve landing safety for upcoming missions.

U.S. Water Utilities Hit by Coordinated Cyberattacks

At least a dozen states reported cyber intrusions targeting water utilities last week, with hackers exploiting internet-connected control systems to alter passwords and disable wells. While no major disruptions have been confirmed, the FBI noted incidents of low water pressure and flooding, prompting advisories to disconnect utilities from the internet and prepare manual overrides.

Iran is suspected of orchestrating the attacks, according to The New York Times. The breaches expose vulnerabilities in local government-run water systems, where budget constraints often lead to inconsistent cybersecurity protections. With most U.S. water infrastructure managed at the municipal level, experts warn these systems could become prime targets for foreign adversaries.

Record Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Spreads Across 15 States

The CDC has linked 10,468 confirmed cases and 12,255 additional suspected cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection causing severe diarrhea, to a nationwide outbreak, the largest on record. Two deaths in Michigan, involving individuals with underlying health conditions, have been reported, though the illness is rarely fatal.

While the outbreak has driven consumers toward farmers markets with some Ohio and Pennsylvania markets seeing 127%+ foot traffic increases experts caution that small farms aren’t immune to contamination. Shorter supply chains may reduce risk, but no produce is risk-free. The CDC recommends washing greens thoroughly, opting for whole heads of lettuce over pre-cut, and cooking vegetables to 158°F to kill the parasite.

FDA Approves First mRNA Flu Vaccine for Adults 50+

Moderna’s mFlusiva, the first flu vaccine using mRNA technology, has received FDA approval for adults 50 and older. Leveraging the same Nobel Prize-winning tech behind COVID-19 vaccines, mRNA shots instruct cells to produce viral proteins, triggering an immune response without using weakened or inactivated viruses.

The vaccine’s faster production timeline could enable more precise targeting of seasonal flu strains, addressing long-standing challenges with traditional vaccine development. Moderna plans to roll out mFlusiva at select retailers in the coming months.
