A data breach that impacted up to 143 million Americans has just hit Equifax, one of the three main consumer credit reporting companies in the United States.
Neither the company's primary consumer nor business credit reporting databases include any indications of unauthorised conduct.
After confirming that select residents of the UK and Canada had experienced unauthorised access to restricted personal information, Equifax waited six weeks to notify the impacted consumers about the serious security breach.
The Social Security numbers, birth dates, residences, and some driver's licence numbers of 143 million Americans were among the private data that hackers were able to obtain.
