Drupal: Critical Drupal RCE Vulnerability Could Let Attackers Take Over Websites Without Authentication

Drupal Patches Critical Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2026-108097)

On October 14, 2026, the Drupal Security Team released urgent security updates to address a critical remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-108097, affecting the Field UI module in Drupal core. The flaw, rated 19/25 under Drupal’s risk scoring system, could allow unauthenticated attackers to compromise affected websites, exposing or altering sensitive data.

While Drupal core alone does not provide a direct exploit path, the security team confirmed that contributed modules third-party extensions that expand Drupal’s functionality create viable attack vectors. At least one known exploit requires no authentication, meaning attackers could exploit the flaw without valid credentials. Custom website code may also introduce additional risks, making exposure assessment dependent on installed modules rather than Drupal version alone.

The advisory (SA-CORE-2026-014) describes exploitation as theoretical, with no public proof-of-concept code or active attacks reported. However, the confirmed attack paths underscore the severity of the issue. The vulnerability affects multiple Drupal versions, including:

  • 10.6.x (before 10.6.19)
  • 11.3.x (before 11.3.19)
  • 11.4.x (before 11.4.10)
  • Drupal 12 development releases (12.0.0-alpha1 to 12.0.0-beta1)

Drupal 8.x, 9.x, 10.5.x and earlier, and 11.2.x and earlier are no longer supported and will not receive patches.

To mitigate the risk, administrators are advised to upgrade to the latest secure versions (10.6.19, 11.3.19, or 11.4.10) or uninstall the Field UI module as a temporary measure. While Drupal Steward (a network-level protection service) blocks some attack paths, it does not provide complete coverage, and updates remain the primary defense.

The advisory follows prior Drupal security concerns, though this vulnerability is distinct from earlier flaws, such as a separate SQL injection issue. Organizations maintaining multiple Drupal installations should verify all deployments, as the broad version range increases potential exposure.
