Pell City School System Hit by Cybersecurity Incident
The Pell City School System in Alabama recently disclosed a security incident affecting some of its technology systems. In a letter to families, Superintendent Justin Burns confirmed that while the student information system remained unaffected, a third party accessed and copied certain files.
Cybersecurity expert Joseph Brunsman of the Brunsman Advisory Group explained that attackers often exploit such breaches to demand ransom, threatening to release stolen data if payment isn’t made. Burns stated the district would not comply with the demands, though Brunsman noted this decision could lead to additional costs if sensitive data such as faculty or former student records is later exposed.
As of now, there is no evidence that student information has been misused. The school system is actively working to resolve the incident and restore affected services. WBRC has reached out for further updates but has not yet received a response. The story will be updated as more details emerge.
