Youth and Shelter Services Data Breach Settlement Offers Compensation to Affected Individuals
A class action settlement has been reached with Youth and Shelter Services Inc. following a September 2023 data breach that exposed the personal information of approximately 20,000 individuals. The breach involved unauthorized access to sensitive data, including names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, financial account information, medical records, and government-issued IDs.
Eligible claimants current and former patients and employees in the U.S. who received a breach notification may submit claims for compensation. Two payment options are available:
- Up to $2,500 for documented out-of-pocket losses (e.g., credit monitoring fees, identity theft expenses, or replacement costs for compromised documents).
- A $50 one-time payment for those without documented losses.
Claims must be filed online or by mail by July 20, 2026, using the unique ID and PIN from the settlement notice. Approved payments will be distributed via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, virtual prepaid cards, or paper checks within 75 days of the court’s final approval, scheduled for August 3, 2026.
The settlement fund covers administrative costs, up to $200,000 in attorneys’ fees, a $2,500 service award to the class representative, and payments to claimants. While Youth and Shelter Services denies wrongdoing, the organization agreed to settle to avoid prolonged litigation. The breach allegedly resulted from inadequate protection of sensitive data, though no further details on the attack vector have been disclosed.
