Comcast Opens New Xfinity Store in Machesney Park Amid Ongoing Data Breach Settlement
Comcast is set to launch a new Xfinity Store in Machesney Park, Illinois, at 1556 W. Lane Road in the Gateway District, repurposing a former GameStop location. The store, opening in the coming weeks, will serve as the second in-person Xfinity location in the Rockford area, offering residents hands-on access to broadband, mobile, and home security services without traveling to the existing Rockford store at 6244 Mulford Village Drive.
The new location will feature live demonstrations of Xfinity’s Gigabit+ internet, Xfinity Mobile, and Xfinity Home Solutions, alongside the Xfinity X1 video platform a cloud-based system integrating cable, streaming, and DVR content. Business customers will also have access to dedicated specialists for commercial connectivity and cybersecurity solutions. Store hours will be Monday–Saturday (10 a.m.–8 p.m. ET) and Sunday (10 a.m.–6 p.m. ET), with walk-in browsing and advance appointments available.
The opening coincides with an active $117.5 million class-action settlement stemming from a 2023 cyberattack on Xfinity’s systems. Attackers exploited a Citrix software vulnerability in October 2023, compromising data belonging to approximately 35 million current and former customers. Comcast disclosed the breach in December 2023, and eligible individuals those who received a breach notification can file claims until September 14, 2026. The settlement offers $50 payments with no proof of loss required or up to $10,000 for documented expenses, such as identity theft or credit monitoring costs. The final court approval hearing is scheduled for August 5, 2026, with payments to follow if approved.
The new store also highlights key technical details behind Xfinity’s services. Gigabit+ internet operates on DOCSIS 3.1, delivering up to 10 Gbps downstream speeds over existing coaxial infrastructure, though upload speeds remain lower than fiber alternatives until DOCSIS 4.0 upgrades roll out. Meanwhile, Xfinity Mobile functions as an MVNO on Verizon’s network, offering coverage parity with Verizon’s postpaid service but subject to data deprioritization during congestion. The service is exclusive to Xfinity internet subscribers and offloads traffic to 20 million Xfinity WiFi hotspots nationwide.
Local officials, including Machesney Park Mayor Steve Johnson, praised the store’s arrival as a boost to the Gateway District’s retail corridor, while Comcast’s regional VP Scott Wottle emphasized the location’s focus on community-specific support and in-person service. No firm opening date has been announced.
