Cyberattack Disrupts Washburn County Government Operations
Washburn County, Wisconsin, is responding to a cyberattack that struck early Thursday morning, disrupting key government services. County Board Chair Lolita Olson confirmed the incident in a public announcement, stating that IT staff detected suspicious activity around 4 a.m. and immediately initiated response protocols to secure systems and data.
The attack’s origin and motives remain unclear, with no confirmed link to recent cyber incidents targeting U.S. water and wastewater utilities some of which have been attributed to Iranian hackers. Unlike those cases, Washburn County’s water and sewer systems were not affected. Officials have not disclosed whether the attackers sought specific data or systems.
In response, the county took its internet-dependent operations offline, impacting phone and email communications. Residents needing assistance have been directed to contact 911 for emergency routing to county departments. While most services are disrupted, the court system remains operational, running on a separate server.
Washburn County is collaborating with the Wisconsin Department of Justice to investigate the breach and assess its scope. Olson noted that the extent of unauthorized access is still under review, with no timeline for restoring full functionality. Despite the disruptions, county offices remain open for in-person inquiries, and updates will be posted on the county’s website.
