VMware and Linux: Linux Kernel Security Flaws Accidentally Exposed, Including Two Critical RCE Bugs

Critical Linux Kernel Vulnerabilities Exposed Before Patches Available

In October, multiple unpatched Linux security flaws were publicly disclosed on mailing lists, revealing technical details before widespread fixes were released. Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) reported two critical KSMBD vulnerabilities ZDI-CAN-33774 and ZDI-CAN-33549 both rated CVSS 9.0, which could enable remote code execution.

The disclosures, credited to Trend Micro’s AI scanner, followed updated Linux kernel guidance treating AI-discovered bugs as public. Linux maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman questioned why reports were published without accompanying patches, though ZDI had not clarified the disclosure process by October 23, 2026.

Key Vulnerabilities

  • ZDI-CAN-33774: A race condition in KSMBD’s request handling could lead to out-of-bounds memory access, allowing remote code execution.
  • ZDI-CAN-33549: An integer underflow in KSMBD’s SMB Direct (RDMA) implementation could cause buffer overflows, enabling remote exploitation if RDMA is enabled.
  • ZDI-CAN-33367: A flaw in the skb_zerocopy networking code could permit local privilege escalation.
  • ZDI-CAN-34068: An out-of-bounds write in the VMware graphics driver could allow local attackers to gain elevated privileges.
  • ZDI-CAN-34076: An uninitialized resource in NVMe over Fabrics could risk information disclosure.

Additionally, ZDI-CAN-32005 a stack-buffer overflow in ConnMan (a network-management service) was reported but is not a kernel vulnerability.

Impact & Mitigation

The most severe flaws affect KSMBD, an in-kernel SMB server distinct from Samba. Systems running Samba alone are not directly exposed. A fix for ZDI-CAN-33549 was reportedly in a development branch for Linux 7.5, but its availability in stable releases remains unconfirmed. No CVEs had been assigned at the time of disclosure.

Public disclosures provide defenders with early warnings but may also aid attackers before patches are deployed. Administrators are advised to:
