Urban One Settles $675K Class Action Over 2025 Data Breach
Urban One Inc. has agreed to a $675,000 settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit stemming from a March 2025 cyberattack that exposed the personal data of approximately 13,778 current and former employees. The breach, described as a targeted attack, allegedly compromised sensitive information, though Urban One denies any wrongdoing, opting to settle to avoid prolonged litigation.
Eligible class members U.S. residents whose data was potentially exposed can file claims for compensation by August 31, 2026. Two payment options are available:
- Documented Losses/Lost Time: Up to $10,000 for out-of-pocket expenses (e.g., identity theft costs, credit monitoring fees, ID replacement) or up to 15 hours of lost time at $25/hour ($375 max), with proof required.
- Alternative Cash Payment: A one-time payout of up to $500 (amount varies based on total claims filed).
Additionally, all class members may opt for three years of CyEx Financial Shield Total, including credit monitoring, fraud insurance, and identity theft resolution services.
Claims can be submitted online or by mail, with payments distributed via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or check. The settlement fund will cover administrative costs, attorneys’ fees ($223,727.50), a $5,000 service award for the class representative, and remaining funds for approved claimants. Final approval is scheduled for September 25, 2026, with payouts expected within 75 days afterward.
The lawsuit alleged Urban One failed to adequately safeguard employee data, exposing individuals to risks like identity theft. The company maintains it did not admit liability in the settlement.
