U.S. Congress: Randy Fine says he was targeted by Iran cyberattack

Iranian Cyberattack Targets U.S. Congressman Randy Fine in Apparent Geotracking Attempt

U.S. Congressman Randy Fine (R-FL) revealed he was the target of a suspected Iranian cyberattack that may have been designed to pinpoint his location, placing him at risk. According to a news release, the House Office of Cyber Security and Capitol Police informed Fine that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was likely behind the operation.

The attack began when a staffer received an email from an individual impersonating a reporter from a major news outlet. The messages closely mimicked legitimate communications between congressional offices and media producers. The attacker later contacted the staffer via Signal, sending a Google Meet link later identified by security officials as a potential geotracking tool.

Fine, a vocal supporter of U.S. and Israeli efforts against Iran, stated the targeting was deliberate. "I was clearly targeted. It wasn't random," he said, referencing recent cyber incidents, including an attack on the FBI. The FBI declined to comment on the matter.

The incident underscores heightened cybersecurity concerns amid escalating tensions with Iran. Earlier this year, the Justice Department seized four web domains linked to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security, which were used for psychological operations, including claims of a destructive malware attack on a U.S.-based medical technology firm. The banking sector has also increased its alert levels for Iranian cyber threats.

Fine credited House leadership for prioritizing member security but warned that such attacks could affect anyone. "Iran and its terror proxies continue to threaten Americans and those who serve this country," he said.
