A Sacramento-based employee at Trofholz Technologies fell victim to a social engineering scam nine years ago when a text message, seemingly from his CEO, instructed him to purchase gift cards for a company award. After sending the codes for $300 worth of cards, he discovered the request was fraudulent his boss had never sent the messages. Yvonne Pire, CEO of the electronic security systems firm, was the one being impersonated, highlighting how easily attackers exploit human trust.

Today, AI has amplified such threats, making phishing attempts more convincing by eliminating telltale signs like typos or suspicious email addresses. Pire notes that her employees now face near-daily AI-generated attacks, including fake requests to update direct deposit details or pay invoices. The 2026 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report analyzing over 22,000 breaches across 145 countries found that the human element was involved in 62% of incidents, with social engineering accounting for 16% of breaches. Attackers are also increasingly exploiting software vulnerabilities (31% of breaches, up from 20%) rather than relying solely on stolen credentials.

AI’s role in cybercrime is currently more about speed than innovation, automating known attack methods rather than introducing entirely new ones. However, the rapid evolution of AI tools could soon change that. Meanwhile, employees’ use of AI platforms on corporate devices has surged from 15% to 45% in a single year with 67% accessing them via personal accounts, leaving security teams blind to potential data leaks. The Verizon report also details multi-stage attacks, such as spamming targets to simulate an IT emergency, then impersonating help desk staff via Microsoft Teams to gain remote access.

Ransomware remains a dominant threat, appearing in 48% of breaches (up from 44%), while third-party vulnerabilities now account for nearly half of all breaches a 60% year-over-year increase. Caleb Kwong, CEO of Sacramento-based Savant Solutions, emphasizes that attackers exploit overlooked gaps, such as unpatched systems or misconfigured security tools. With threats evolving faster than defensive signatures can keep up, Kwong advocates for a zero-trust framework and rapid recovery protocols, noting that even robust defenses can be breached.

IBM’s research underscores the financial stakes: the average data breach cost $4.4 million globally, though AI-driven security measures reduced costs by $1.9 million for adopters. Yet, 13% of organizations experienced breaches involving AI models, with 60% suffering data compromise and 31% facing operational disruptions. "Shadow AI" unauthorized AI implementations was found in 20% of organizations, often undetected until problems arose.

As AI tools become more sophisticated, so do deepfake attacks, where generative AI mimics voices and likenesses with alarming realism. Pire’s company now conducts weekly AI training, blending productivity lessons with cybersecurity awareness. She stresses the importance of ethical AI development, warning that criminals won’t hesitate to exploit the technology. While AI can streamline tasks like email filtering, Pire insists on keeping humans in the loop for critical decisions, ensuring accountability in an era where automation blurs the line between convenience and risk.
