Transport Malta

Transport Malta

On the night of September 25–26, 2020, Transport Malta, the national maritime and transport regulator of Malta, suffered a severe cyberattack that crippled its entire IT infrastructure. The attack rendered all digital services inoperable, halting critical operations such as road license renewals and other regulatory functions. The disruption lasted five days, causing significant inconvenience to motorists, businesses, and maritime stakeholders reliant on the agency’s services. While authorities managed to restore systems, they did not confirm whether personal or sensitive data was compromised, leaving the extent of potential breaches unclear. The perpetrators and their motives remained unidentified, adding to the uncertainty. The incident underscored the vulnerability of government-linked entities to cyber threats, particularly those managing essential public services. The outage not only disrupted daily operations but also raised concerns about the resilience of Malta’s transport and maritime regulatory framework against future attacks.
