Trump Mobile’s T1 Smartphone Launch Marred by Data Breach Affecting 27,000 Customers
Trump Mobile, the smartphone venture operated by the family of former U.S. President Donald Trump, is investigating a data breach that exposed the personal information of approximately 27,000 customers. The incident came to light after an Australian programmer with two decades of IT experience discovered a security vulnerability in the company’s pre-order system and reported it to Trump Mobile.
The breach impacted customers who pre-ordered the T1, Trump Mobile’s first smartphone, priced at $499 (750,000 won). Exposed data includes names, email addresses, mailing addresses, order numbers, and phone numbers, though the company stated that credit card details, banking information, Social Security numbers (SSNs), call records, and text messages were not compromised. A cryptocurrency YouTuber known as Voidzilla, who pre-ordered the T1, confirmed the leak, noting that his personal details excluding payment information were exposed.
Trump Mobile denied any direct compromise of its systems, infrastructure, or networks, attributing the breach to a vulnerability in its pre-order process. The company has since strengthened security measures and is reviewing its legal obligations regarding customer notifications. The number of affected users was independently verified by Jonathan Soma, a Columbia University professor, who analyzed the exposed code and confirmed 27,224 pre-orders were recorded.
The T1, announced in June 2023 to mark the 10th anniversary of Trump’s presidential bid, was marketed as a "Made in USA" device by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. However, skepticism arose over the feasibility of U.S. manufacturing, with analysts noting the lack of a domestic supply chain for smartphone assembly. The phone’s release was delayed by nine months, and its "Made in America" claim was later softened to "designed with American values in mind." Trump Mobile CEO Pat O’Brien stated that initial units were assembled in the U.S., with plans for future components to be locally sourced.
The T1’s specifications a 6.78-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 series processor, triple camera, and 5,000 mAh battery lag behind flagship models from Samsung and Apple, with slower charging speeds (30W vs. Samsung’s 45W) and limited consumer reviews. Additional controversies include an incorrect U.S. flag design on the phone’s back (featuring 11 stripes instead of 13) and allegations that the T1 closely resembles a 2024 HTC smartphone.
Trump Mobile continues to investigate the breach while addressing the broader challenges surrounding the T1’s launch and production claims.
