Tidewater Community College suffered a data breach incident in 2016 which exposed the personal information of more than 3,000 current and former TCC employees.
The emails that were sent to incorrect individuals included information names, earnings, and withholding and deduction information for all 2015 employees.
Scammers target financial data to file fraudulent returns.
TCC President Edna Baehre-Kolovani investigated the incident with forensic investigators to gauge the extent of the breach and offered free credit monitoring to the affected staff.
