IntraCare Hit by Cyber Breach, Forcing Surgery Delays and IT Shutdown
Private healthcare provider IntraCare, specializing in image-guided medical diagnostics and interventions, suffered a cyber breach on Friday, March 20, prompting an immediate shutdown of its IT systems. The incident has disrupted operations, leading to the deferral of 28 patient surgeries and potential delays in appointments.
Due to the complexity of the breach, IntraCare has not yet determined whether patient records were compromised. The company’s database, including patient contact details, remains offline, complicating direct communication with affected individuals. While the exact number of patients in its system is undisclosed, IntraCare treats over 2,000 patients annually.
CyberCX, an independent Australasian cybersecurity firm, has been engaged to conduct a forensic investigation. IntraCare is also collaborating with Health NZ, the National Cyber Security Centre, police, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as part of an all-of-government response. Authorities are assisting in assessing the breach’s scope and preventing further misuse of data.
Health NZ confirmed its Cyber Security Incident Management Team is in contact with IntraCare to provide support. The company has pledged to share updates as the investigation progresses, acknowledging the disruption and potential concerns for patients.
