Japanese Firms Face Widespread Data Leak Risks, Survey Reveals

A recent survey by Teikoku Databank Ltd. found that 30.2% of large Japanese companies have experienced data leaks or suspected leaks, whether through cyberattacks or human error. The issue affects businesses of all sizes, with 16.2% of all surveyed firms reporting confirmed or potential incidents.

Over the past year alone, 5.5% of companies acknowledged leaks, while 14.8% admitted uncertainty about whether they had been compromised highlighting gaps in detection and awareness. Human error emerged as a key factor, with cases including misdirected emails and phishing scams. One company reported sending sensitive information after receiving a fraudulent but urgent-sounding email, bypassing verification.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cited financial and staffing limitations as barriers to implementing robust security measures. The survey, conducted from October 9–14, gathered responses from 1,328 companies, underscoring the persistent risks of data exposure across Japan’s corporate sector.
