Target

In 2013, Target fell victim to a significant cyber attack that compromised the payment card information of 41 million customers and the personal information of approximately 70 million customers. The attackers gained entry into Target's network by spear phishing a third-party vendor, ultimately installing malware to harvest customer data over two months. This breach, one of the largest in retail history, led to the CEO's departure and resulted in a combination of fines and remediation costs totaling approximately $290 million. Although Target settled country-wide claims for $18.5 million, the overall expense, including consulting and other related fees, pushed the cost close to $290 million. This event underscores the critical importance of cybersecurity vigilance, especially in protecting against sophisticated attack methods targeting third-party vendors.
