Suffolk Credit Union Data Breach Traced to Third-Party Vendor Incident
A data breach at Suffolk Credit Union, a New York-based member-owned financial institution, has exposed sensitive personal and financial information of an undisclosed number of current and former members. The breach originated from a cybersecurity incident at Mercadien, P.C., CPAs, a former third-party vendor, rather than Suffolk Credit Union’s own systems.
Unauthorized access to Mercadien’s systems occurred between September 17 and October 9, 2025, though the intrusion was not detected until November 7, 2025. Mercadien completed its investigation and shared findings with Suffolk Credit Union on August 13, 2026, prompting the credit union to begin notifying affected individuals on September 11, 2026.
The exposed data includes names, Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, government-issued IDs, and other identity verification details, heightening risks of identity theft, fraud, and phishing attacks. Regulators in Delaware, California, Vermont, and Hawaii have been notified.
Suffolk Credit Union has reported no evidence of misuse but is offering affected members complimentary two-year access to Experian IdentityWorks Credit 3B, which includes credit monitoring, identity restoration, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance. The enrollment deadline is December 31, 2026.
National class action firm Edelson Lechtzin LLP has launched an investigation into potential legal claims on behalf of impacted individuals. The breach underscores vulnerabilities in third-party vendor security, a growing concern in financial data protection.
