As authorities strive to determine what exactly is going on, the fallout from an eight-month-old cyberattack on a county in Long Island, New York, has turned into mudslinging.
After a ransomware outbreak attacked Suffolk County, county executive Steve Bellone declared nine different states of emergency.
Executives in Suffolk County have the power to recruit people without seeking permission from the legislature by announcing a state of emergency.
According to a county spokesperson who spoke to Newsday, the county's ongoing state of emergency is required because some operations, such as remote public document searches, are still not working and need to be completely overhauled because the previous clerk's IT administrator neglected to update these systems in years.
