Sogang University Suffers Data Breach Affecting 180,000 Individuals

Sogang University in South Korea disclosed a cyberattack that exposed the personal data of approximately 180,000 students, alumni, and staff. The breach, detected by the university, involved unauthorized access to integrated login accounts by an unidentified external party.

The compromised data included names, student and staff ID numbers, affiliations, email addresses, mobile phone numbers, and encrypted login passwords. While sensitive details like resident registration numbers were not affected, the university confirmed that encrypted passwords were among the leaked information. In response, Sogang urged all affected individuals to change their passwords immediately.

Upon discovering the breach, the university took swift action, blocking the attacking IP address, restricting access to the affected service, and isolating the network to contain the intrusion. Additional security measures, including enhanced monitoring systems, were implemented to prevent further damage.

The university also warned members to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts, as the leaked data could be exploited in fraudulent calls, emails, or text messages.
