Signature Healthcare: Massachusetts hospital turning ambulances away after cyberattack

Cyberattack Disrupts Massachusetts Hospital System, Forcing Ambulance Diversions and Service Cancellations

A cyberattack on Signature Healthcare, which operates Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital in Massachusetts, has disrupted critical operations, forcing the system to divert ambulances and implement downtime procedures. The incident, detected on Monday, has impacted multiple information systems, prompting the hospital to work with external cybersecurity experts to investigate and restore affected services.

While inpatient care, emergency services, and scheduled surgeries remain operational, chemotherapy infusion treatments for cancer patients were canceled on Tuesday due to the outage. The hospital, which has served the Brockton area and surrounding Boston suburbs for over 125 years, warned of delays in patient services as staff rely on manual processes. No hacking group has claimed responsibility as of Tuesday.

This attack follows a recent surge in cyber incidents targeting healthcare providers. Earlier this year, Mississippi’s largest hospital and an Idaho medical facility faced similar disruptions, with the latter losing all phone and internet connectivity. Additionally, Iranian-linked hackers were reportedly behind a cyberattack on Stryker, a medical device manufacturer, affecting hospitals using its communication and healthcare products.

Errol Weiss, Chief Security Officer at Health ISAC, told Recorded Future News that the healthcare sector is experiencing "a sustained, high level of malicious activity," including ransomware and data-theft operations. Many incidents remain undisclosed as organizations work with law enforcement and regulators, but the volume and impact of attacks are elevated compared to previous years. Weiss noted that both nation-state actors (including Iran) and financially motivated cybercriminals are targeting the industry, with some attacks blending ransomware, data extortion, and destructive tactics.

The potential for life-threatening disruptions remains a major concern, as cyber threats could escalate from financial extortion to direct interference with patient care. Health ISAC continues to collaborate with federal agencies, including HHS and CISA, to share threat intelligence and mitigate risks across the sector.
