Hong Kong’s Shun Hing Group Hit by Cyberattack, Exposing Data of Over 1 Million People
A cyberattack on Hong Kong-based appliance distributor Shun Hing Group has compromised the personal data of 1.05 million individuals, according to the city’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD). The breach, reported by the company on March 23, prompted an investigation by the privacy watchdog.
The attack encrypted sensitive data belonging to 920,000 customers, including names, addresses, and email addresses. Additionally, 1,000 employees had more critical information exposed, such as identity card numbers, bank account details, and salary data.
In an April statement, Shun Hing Group confirmed unauthorized access to its systems, leading to system damage. The company filed a police report and enlisted independent cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident. Founded in 1953, Shun Hing serves as the exclusive distributor for Panasonic in Hong Kong and Macau, amplifying the potential impact of the breach. The PCPD continues to assess the full scope of the attack.
