Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Shanghai Jiao Tong University reported that they have become victim of a data breach in which 9.5 billion rows of email metadata got leaked.

This database held the metadata for a sizable number of emails.

It was subsequently established that a sizable institution in China was in control of this server and the email information.

The IP address and user agent of the person checking their email were also included in this data.

One might view the broad strokes of an email exchange using this metadata, such as which email address was sending or receiving emails from another email address.
