Senate Website Defaced in Cyberattack Claimed by "Nullsec Philippines"
The official website of the Philippine Senate was defaced in a cyberattack on Thursday, with a group identifying itself as "Nullsec Philippines" taking responsibility. The Senate’s Electronic Data Processing and Management Information System (EDP-MIS) Bureau confirmed the incident, stating that no confidential information was compromised.
Upon detecting the breach, the Senate’s technical team immediately activated security protocols, contained the attack, and launched an investigation into its cause and scope. Additional security measures have since been implemented, though the website remained "under maintenance" as of 4 p.m. on Thursday.
In a statement, the Senate assured the public that protecting system integrity remains a top priority and that monitoring efforts are ongoing. Meanwhile, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)’s National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) coordinated with the Senate to restore the site, confirming the attack was limited to defacement.
The DICT also announced that legal action will be pursued under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 once the perpetrators are identified. Both agencies are closely monitoring for further malicious activity and urged the public to rely on official updates from the Senate and DICT.
The incident follows heightened security measures in the Senate, including a work-from-home directive for personnel on June 10–11 and a no-visitor policy, as ordered by Senate President Pro Tempore Sherwin T. Gatchalian. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though "Nullsec Philippines" cited calls for transparency and accountability in its claim.
