Semperis: Report Says AI Is Being Used in Most Ransomware Attacks

AI-Powered Ransomware Attacks Surge, With Hackers Exploiting Victims’ Own Tools

A new global survey by cybersecurity firm Semperis reveals a sharp rise in AI-driven ransomware attacks, with 84% of victimized organizations reporting that artificial intelligence played a role in the breach. Nearly half (49%) of those targeted said attackers weaponized their own AI tools against them, underscoring a growing trend of adversaries leveraging advanced technology to enhance their tactics.

The report, based on responses from 1,200 IT and security professionals across nine countries, paints a grim picture of the current threat landscape. 69% of victims were hit multiple times within a year, while 59% paid at least one ransom highlighting the persistent and financially damaging nature of these attacks.

Beyond financial losses, the human toll is severe. Over a third of organizations reported psychological or physical threats against employees, with some staff or their families forced to relocate or change jobs due to intimidation. Former U.S. National Cyber Director Chris Inglis warned that autonomous ransomware where attacks operate with minimal human oversight is already a reality. He emphasized that AI-powered defenses may be the only viable countermeasure, as traditional security measures struggle to keep pace.

The findings suggest that cybercriminals are not just adopting AI but building entire operations around it, escalating both the sophistication and personal impact of ransomware campaigns.
