Veritracks GPS Monitoring Platform Hack Exposes Sensitive Offender and Law Enforcement Data
A hack of Veritracks, an online platform used by law enforcement, parole, and probation officers to track offenders via GPS ankle monitors, has exposed highly sensitive data. The breach, revealed on Friday, was disclosed by a journalist who obtained the compromised information from a hacktivist group.
The leaked dataset included personal details of thousands of monitored individuals, such as names, home addresses, phone numbers, physical descriptions (eye/hair color, height, tattoos), and whether they were registered sex offenders. Additionally, the breach compromised data on government agents and private-sector employees responsible for monitoring these individuals.
To verify the legitimacy of the data, the journalist contacted individuals listed in the dataset, confirming its accuracy though many recipients reacted with skepticism, often hanging up or ending calls abruptly. The hackers claimed their motive was to expose poor security practices within law enforcement-related systems.
Despite the breach, Veritracks remains operational, and the company has not publicly acknowledged the incident or responded to inquiries. The data was shared exclusively with the journalist and the non-profit DDoSecrets, with no evidence of wider public dissemination. The exposed information has since been destroyed after analysis.
