Seagrass Boutique Hospitality Group Hit by Kairos Ransomware Attack

Seagrass Boutique Hospitality Group, a Rhodes, NSW-based company behind high-profile brands like The Meat & Wine Co and Hunter Barrel, confirmed a cybersecurity incident on February 12, after the Kairos ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a statement, Seagrass acknowledged unauthorized access to part of its IT network, prompting an immediate response including system isolation and an ongoing investigation with external cybersecurity experts. The company has not disclosed further details, declining additional commentary when contacted.

Kairos, a ransomware group active since November 2024, operates on Russian-language hacking forums and has claimed at least 70 victims to date. The gang follows a standard extortion playbook: victims have seven days to respond to demands before Kairos publishes proof of the breach. If no agreement is reached, the group escalates by notifying partners, customers, and competitors, followed by a full data leak risking legal repercussions, reputational harm, and financial losses.

Kairos’ most recent Australian victim was Heidelberg Golf Club in Melbourne, from which it allegedly exfiltrated 24.6GB of data. While Seagrass has not confirmed the extent of the breach, the incident underscores the growing threat posed by emerging ransomware groups targeting diverse sectors.
