Reform UK Leader Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Hack and Undeclared £5m Gift
Former GCHQ cybersecurity chief and first CEO of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), Ciaran Martin, has dismissed claims by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage that his phone was hacked by Russian state actors as "unsubstantiated." The dispute follows Farage’s allegation that hostile actors allegedly linked to Moscow compromised his device, email, and bank accounts via spear phishing, leading to the leak of a confidential £5 million gift from Thai crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.
Farage, who sought forensic analysis from unnamed "counter espionage experts," stated the breach exposed the donation, which he had intended to keep private. However, Martin criticized the lack of transparency, noting that no technical evidence or details about the investigating firm had been disclosed. He also questioned why Farage did not report the incident to the NCSC, which has assisted political figures and parties with foreign interference concerns since 2017.
The £5 million gift, reportedly received before Farage’s 2024 election as an MP, has triggered a parliamentary investigation into whether he violated Commons rules by failing to declare it. Farage maintains the funds were a personal gift for lifelong security, unrelated to his political role. Yet, his purchase of a £1.4 million cash property in 2024 shortly after receiving the donation has raised further questions. A Reform UK spokesperson claimed the house was bought with earnings from Farage’s 2023 appearance on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, but financial records from his company, Thorn In The Side Ltd, contradict this explanation.
Opposition leaders, including Liberal Democrat Ed Davey and Labour’s Anna Turley, have accused Farage of evading accountability, with Davey suggesting his silence implies guilt. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is now examining whether Farage breached disclosure rules, while his shifting explanations over the donation’s purpose and the property purchase continue to draw criticism.
