Prince George County Hit by Cyberattack, Exposing Resident and Employee Data
Prince George County, Maryland, fell victim to a cybersecurity attack discovered on or around June 11, after its technology team detected disruptions in county computer systems. The incident potentially exposed sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, and Social Security numbers of residents and employees.
County officials responded swiftly, isolating the attack and enlisting external cybersecurity experts to investigate. While critical public safety services remained unaffected, the county confirmed that all systems are now secure, with operations restored to normal. As a precaution, affected individuals are being offered complimentary credit monitoring.
The county has reported the incident to federal and state authorities, including the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Division and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). In response, Prince George County has implemented new cybersecurity measures and is evaluating further steps to bolster network defenses.
