Poland Faces Record Surge in Cyberattacks, Blames State-Backed Threats
Poland experienced an unprecedented wave of cyberattacks in 2025, with incidents surging by over 140% compared to the previous year, according to Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski. The country recorded 682,000 cyber incidents, a sharp rise attributed to its support for Ukraine and role as a logistics hub for Western aid factors that have made it a prime target for hostile state actors, particularly Russia.
Officials have repeatedly linked the attacks to Moscow, citing a 2024 incident where a suspected Russian cyberattack on the Polish Press Agency disseminated a false report about Poland mobilizing for war. Gawkowski described Poland as "the main target" among NATO nations for Russian cyber operations, prompting the government to allocate over 3 billion zlotys ($760 million) to bolster cybersecurity defenses.
The attacks have increasingly focused on critical infrastructure, including water, energy, and government systems. In August 2025, Polish authorities thwarted an attempt to disrupt a major city’s water supply. The minister warned that the "digital war" against Poland is escalating, with state-backed threats growing more sophisticated and disruptive. The surge in cyber activity underscores the broader geopolitical tensions shaping Europe’s cybersecurity landscape.
