OpenAI and xAI: Warden Stealer Malware Targets Claude, Codex, Grok and Cursor to Steal AI Agent Data

Warden Stealer: A Rising Threat Targeting AI Assistants and Developer Tools

A rapidly evolving malware-as-a-service (MaaS) operation, Warden Stealer, is expanding its focus to target AI assistants and coding agents, including Claude, Codex, Grok, and Cursor. The Rust-based infostealer is among the first malware families systematically harvesting AI-agent configuration files, local tokens, prompt histories, conversation databases, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) settings, marking a shift in the infostealer threat landscape.

Unlike traditional stealers that primarily target browser passwords and cryptocurrency wallets, Warden operators are increasingly prioritizing AI tools as a concentrated source of credentials and sensitive developer context. Stolen AI-agent data can expose access tokens, API keys, MCP connection details, project names, internal source-code context, and historical prompts, potentially revealing an organization’s systems, ongoing work, and connected services.

Researchers linked CallbackBeaver to Warden Stealer based on technical overlaps, including Rust development, distinctive code morphing, a dedicated loader, and matching cryptocurrency clipper configurations. The malware supports Windows 8 through 11 and is marketed as a comprehensive data-theft platform, capable of extracting data from Chromium- and Gecko-based browsers, cryptocurrency wallet extensions, password managers, messaging apps, 2FA tools, and VPN clients. Its collection scope varies by operator-controlled build configurations, allowing affiliates to customize targets.

Warden Stealer v1.9, announced on September 29, officially added support for stealing tokens from AI coding agents. However, earlier samples already included custom collection rules for AI-agent data, indicating that operators had been pursuing these artifacts before the capability became a mainstream feature.

The malware’s loader reconstructs an embedded stealer payload in memory, often injecting it into explorer.exe via remote-process memory allocation. Its builds employ obfuscation techniques, including Base64-like encoding, custom decompression, lazy string decoding, dynamic API resolution, and junk code, alongside oversized PE overlays to hinder analysis. Warden also performs anti-VM checks through SMBIOS inspection, CPUID vendor checks, and registry enumeration, halting execution if a virtualized environment is detected.

Additionally, Warden targets Chromium browser secrets protected by Application-Bound Encryption (ABE), a security feature introduced by Google to bind encrypted data to a specific machine. The malware scans browser memory for v20 key material and injects shellcode into the browser process to decrypt the v20_master_key, bypassing ABE protections in a manner similar to Vidar and Remus but with independent implementation.

Warden is distributed through cracked software, game cheats, malvertising, and ClickFix campaigns. Its emergence underscores the growing risk of AI assistants functioning as a developer’s working memory, where a stolen archive could provide attackers with account access and operational context to identify high-value projects, repositories, or credentials.

Indicators of compromise (IoCs) include multiple SHA-256 hashes associated with Warden’s loader, though domains and IP addresses remain defanged to prevent accidental resolution. Organizations are advised to treat local AI-agent files with the same sensitivity as browser profiles, password stores, and cloud credentials.
