Massive Alleged Breach at China’s National Supercomputing Center Exposes Sensitive Military Data

A hacker claims to have stolen over 10 petabytes of highly sensitive data from China’s National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) in Tianjin, raising serious national security concerns. The breach, allegedly carried out by a group calling itself FlamingChina, includes military, aerospace, and missile-related research, as well as data linked to major defense organizations such as the Aviation Industry Corporation of China and the National University of Defense Technology.

Cybersecurity experts who reviewed leaked samples believe the attacker exploited a compromised VPN and used a botnet to exfiltrate data undetected over six months. While the method was not highly sophisticated, it exposed systemic vulnerabilities in China’s critical infrastructure. The stolen data reportedly includes classified documents, technical simulations, and weapon system research, with samples being sold for thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency.

The NSCC, launched in 2009, serves as a key high-performance computing hub for government agencies, universities, and defense institutions, supporting projects in aerospace, AI, and hypersonic missile development. The breach could provide rival nations with intelligence on China’s most advanced military programs, potentially escalating geopolitical tensions and accelerating the global cyber arms race.

Chinese authorities have not yet responded, and while the breach remains unverified, experts consider the leaked data credible. The incident may also undermine confidence in China’s efforts to reduce dependence on Western technology, particularly in light of existing export controls on critical components like semiconductors.
