Norsk Hydro

In March 2019, Norsk Hydro, one of the world's largest aluminum companies, faced a devastating cyberattack impacting all 35,000 employees across 40 countries. The breach was executed via an infected email, crippling production lines, locking files on thousands of servers and PCs, and forcing operations to switch to manual processes. The financial toll of the attack neared $71 million. Despite the severity, Norsk Hydro chose not to pay the ransom demanded by the attackers. Instead, the company focused on restoring operations with assistance from Microsoft's cybersecurity team, while maintaining transparency about the breach with the public.
