French Ministry of Ecological Transition Hit by Sophisticated Cyberattack
Multiple online platforms linked to France’s Ministry of Ecological Transition were taken offline Wednesday following a "sophisticated cyberattack." The incident is the latest in a string of breaches targeting French public institutions, including a high-profile data theft from the national tax authority this summer that affected hundreds of thousands of individuals and businesses, as well as a separate attack compromising data from tens of thousands of teachers and students.
The ministry confirmed that the attack, which occurred last week, specifically targeted messaging tools. In response, authorities implemented "special measures" to contain the breach and bolster system security. A formal complaint has been filed with the public prosecutor’s office.
Affected services included the ministry’s public consultation platform for environmental regulations, as well as several regional administrative sites, which displayed maintenance messages. The disruption follows recent cyberattacks on France’s tax and education ministries, prompting Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to announce the creation of a "new cyber unit" in late August to improve operational response capabilities.
According to cybersecurity outlet FrenchBreaches, an anonymous hacker claimed responsibility for the attack on a criminal forum, alleging possession of thousands of stolen records. The incident underscores the growing threat to French government infrastructure amid a surge in targeted cyber campaigns.
