Dutch Women’s Rights Group Pursues Mass Legal Claim Over Medical Data Breach
A new advocacy group, the Women’s Rights Collective, is launching a mass legal claim seeking compensation for women whose sensitive medical data was stolen in a 2023 cyberattack on Clinical Diagnostics, a Dutch laboratory. The breach exposed records of hundreds of thousands of women enrolled in the national cervical cancer screening program, including highly personal health information.
The Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) recently determined that Clinical Diagnostics failed to adequately secure patient data, prompting the legal action. The claim targets both the laboratory and the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport, alleging negligence in protecting sensitive information.
Public trust in preventive health programs has since declined, with a Hart van Nederland Panel survey revealing that over one-third of Dutch respondents now question their participation in national screenings.
Beyond the data breach, the Women’s Rights Collective is expanding its efforts to address broader digital abuse against women. The group is also taking legal action against the pornographic website Motherless, alleging that it hosted tens of thousands of videos depicting women being sexually abused while unconscious. The initiative frames these cases as part of a larger push for women’s rights in the digital space.
