Russian National Linked to Void Blizzard Hacking Group Faces U.S. Charges
A 36-year-old Russian national, Denis Obrezko, appeared in U.S. federal court in Boston this week on charges of aiding a Kremlin-backed cyberespionage campaign. Obrezko, a native of Stavropol, Russia, was extradited from Thailand, where he was arrested in November 2023 during a joint operation with the FBI on the resort island of Phuket. Authorities seized laptops, mobile phones, and cryptocurrency wallets from his hotel room.
U.S. prosecutors allege Obrezko provided critical infrastructure including virtual private servers and internet domains to Void Blizzard, a Russian state-linked hacking group. These resources were used to facilitate cyberattacks against U.S. and international targets. An FBI affidavit identified at least 11 compromised U.S. companies, though the actual number of victims is believed to be far higher.
Void Blizzard, described by researchers as a relatively new but active threat group, has targeted government agencies, defense contractors, transportation firms, media organizations, healthcare providers, and NGOs across Europe and North America. The group typically exploits stolen or purchased credentials to infiltrate networks and exfiltrate emails and internal documents.
Obrezko remains in U.S. custody as the case proceeds. Russian diplomats previously sought his return, and Moscow later placed him on an international wanted list. The Justice Department has not commented on the ongoing prosecution.
