Cyberattack Targets Water Systems Across Multiple States, Including Michigan
Michigan officials are investigating a coordinated cyberattack that disrupted over 30 community water systems in Minnesota and potentially other states on July 26–27. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) confirmed receiving reports from local communities about suspicious activity matching federal descriptions of the incident.
While all affected systems remained operational and no public health risks were reported, the FBI and other agencies are actively involved in the investigation. Early assessments suggest Iranian hackers may have been responsible, though no definitive attribution has been confirmed. President Donald Trump, however, publicly disputed Iran’s involvement, instead blaming Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Separately, Michigan’s MiLogin identity management system experienced a temporary outage on July 27, though it remains unclear whether this incident was linked to the broader cyberattack. The state resolved the issue later that evening.
