Microsoft and Meta Face Major Cybersecurity Incidents in October 2026
Microsoft’s October 2026 Patch Tuesday set a new record, addressing 1,413 vulnerabilities more than the company patched in all of 2025. Among the fixes, CVE-2026-96951, an 8.8-severity Windows flaw, stands out as actively exploited in the wild. The vulnerability allows attackers to bypass Mark of the Web protections, enabling malicious files to evade warnings like Defender SmartScreen and Office Protected View. Federal agencies were directed by CISA to remediate the flaw by October 16, underscoring its urgency.
Microsoft also introduced risk cohorts, a provisional system grouping vulnerabilities by deployment, exposure, and trust boundaries to help defenders prioritize fixes amid the growing volume of patches.
Separately, Meta disclosed a breach affecting 1,500 individuals, primarily U.S.-based employees, after attackers accessed GitHub repositories using stolen credentials. Detected weeks before notifications began on October 13, the incident exposed 99% business data, including product-related code, and 1% personal information some of which was synthetic or anonymized test material. Meta involved GitHub and law enforcement in its response but has not detailed the specific personal data compromised.
While AI-driven threats remained subdued this week, OpenAI’s reported early-stage acquisition talks with security firm Trail of Bits signal ongoing shifts in how AI companies approach cybersecurity. The incidents highlight persistent risks in both traditional and development environments.
