Microsoft: Microsoft fixes exploited Mark of the Web bypass vulnerability (CVE-2026-96951)

Microsoft’s Record-Breaking Patch Tuesday Addresses Actively Exploited Zero-Day and Wormable Flaws

Microsoft’s latest Patch Tuesday has set a new benchmark, addressing over 1,400 security vulnerabilities, including a zero-day flaw (CVE-2026-96951) actively exploited in the wild. The vulnerability, a command injection bug in Windows Shell, allows attackers to bypass Mark of the Web (MotW) protections critical security measures that warn users about potentially dangerous files or force them into Protected View.

Exploitation requires user interaction, such as opening a malicious file delivered via email, instant messaging (Teams, Slack), or compromised websites. Once triggered, the flaw enables attackers to execute arbitrary code without the usual security warnings. This marks the third Windows Shell vulnerability exploited in 2026, following CVE-2026-21510 (linked to APT28/Fancy Bear) and CVE-2026-32202, an incomplete patch for the earlier flaw. While attribution for CVE-2026-96951 remains unclear, its active exploitation underscores the urgency of applying the fix.

Beyond the zero-day, Microsoft patched 55 wormable remote code execution (RCE) flaws zero-click vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure components, including DHCP Server, Remote Desktop Gateway, and Network Policy Server. These flaws, if left unpatched, could enable self-propagating attacks across networks.

Another high-priority fix, CVE-2026-102866, targets a critical cryptographic signature verification flaw in SharePoint, allowing unauthenticated attackers to hijack user accounts by modifying stolen authentication tokens. While Microsoft rates exploitation as less likely due to specific configuration requirements, security experts warn that attackers could still bypass these constraints.

The surge in disclosed vulnerabilities reflects accelerated bug discovery, driven in part by AI-assisted research. However, experts note that volume alone is no longer the key metric organizations must prioritize actively exploited or high-risk flaws over sheer CVE counts to mitigate real-world threats effectively.
