Mariner Wealth Advisors Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Information of Nearly 9,000 Individuals
Mariner Wealth Advisors LLC, a Kansas-based wealth management firm, has reported a data breach affecting 8,995 individuals across the U.S., including 117 Massachusetts residents and 17 Maine residents. The incident stemmed from unauthorized access to three associates’ cloud applications by a criminal third party.
The breach was discovered after the company detected suspicious activity, prompting an investigation with third-party cybersecurity experts. The probe confirmed that the attacker accessed and downloaded files containing personally identifiable information (PII), including names, account numbers, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s licenses, and other government ID numbers.
In response, Mariner Wealth Advisors is providing complimentary credit monitoring through Cyberscout, offering single-bureau credit monitoring, reports, scores, and fraud assistance for 12 or 24 months, depending on the affected individual’s state. Those impacted must enroll within 90 days of receiving their notification letter via the Cyberscout website using a unique activation code. A dedicated support line is available for assistance.
The breach highlights the ongoing risks of cloud-based storage and the potential exposure of sensitive financial data in cyberattacks.
