Mariner Wealth Advisors Suffers Data Breach Impacting Nearly 9,000 Clients
Mariner Wealth Advisors, a Kansas-based firm managing $609 billion in assets, disclosed a data breach last week that may have exposed the personal information of approximately 8,995 individuals. According to a filing with Maine regulators, the incident involved unauthorized access to three associates’ cloud applications, potentially compromising names, account numbers, birthdates, and Social Security numbers.
The company detected suspicious activity in November and immediately activated its incident response plan, isolating and securing the affected accounts. While financial and investment systems remained unaffected, Mariner confirmed that a "criminal third party" accessed and downloaded certain files. No evidence of data misuse has been found to date.
Mariner has engaged federal law enforcement and regulatory authorities, hired a third-party researcher to monitor for data misuse, and is offering identity theft protection services to affected clients. The firm, backed by private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners and asset manager Neuberger Berman, operates across 42 states.
This breach follows a rising trend of cyber incidents targeting wealth management firms, including recent disclosures from LPL Financial and Ameriprise Financial.
