A ransomware virus found its way onto a village computer late last month.

The malicious software threatens to wipe out affected computers unless victims pay the hackers a ransom before a deadline.

The hackers in these cases demanded, on average, about $4,900 worth of bitcoin, the digital currency often used to keep illegal transactions anonymous.
