Cyberattacks Disrupt Iran’s Major Banks, Temporarily Halting Card Services
Iran’s state-owned banking technology provider, Informatics Services Corporation (ISC), reported on Tuesday that cyberattacks had disrupted card-based services at three major banks Bank Melli, Bank Saderat, and Bank Tejarat. The attacks led to the temporary suspension of all card-related operations, including ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and mobile banking applications, as a precautionary measure to prevent further unauthorized access.
The incident follows a separate cyberattack on June 14 that targeted a shared communication system, affecting Bank Melli, Bank Saderat, Bank Tejarat, and the Export Development Bank of Iran. According to Iran’s Banking Coordination Council, the earlier disruption took several days to resolve but did not result in customer data breaches.
Iran’s central bank stated that the latest disruptions were expected to be fully resolved by Wednesday morning, with services returning to normal. While officials have not identified the perpetrators, Iranian authorities have previously attributed similar attacks to foreign adversaries, including Israel, though no official confirmation has been provided. Israel has not commented on the allegations.
