Banking Trust at Risk: Customers Prioritize Security But Breaches Could Drive Mass Exits

A new report from Integris reveals a stark disconnect between customer confidence in bank security and the reality of rising cyber threats. According to the 2026 Banking Trust and Technology Report, 51% of U.S. bank customers chose their primary financial institution based on trust in its security measures. Yet, 67% would consider leaving after a major data breach with nearly a quarter (24%) "very likely" to switch exposing a fragile foundation of loyalty.

The survey, which polled 1,000 banking customers and 673 executives, found that while 90% of customers trust their bank to protect their data, this confidence may be misplaced. Many assume their institution has never experienced a breach, but executives report a far different reality: 51% faced a significant email-based breach in the past year, and 50% dealt with mobile-related incidents. Despite this, 64% of executives admit they lack full visibility into IT spending, even as nearly half anticipate a 40%+ budget increase in 2026.

Customer concerns reflect this tension. Hackers stealing bank data top the list of fears (40%), while artificial intelligence (AI) introduces new anxieties 52% worry AI could freeze accounts or block legitimate transactions, and 24% don’t understand how their bank uses the technology. The report underscores a growing demand for transparency, with customers expecting clearer communication about cybersecurity and AI safeguards.

As banks navigate escalating threats and evolving expectations, the findings suggest that technical defenses alone won’t be enough. Preserving trust will require bridging the "breach-perception gap" through proactive, plain-language updates on security practices.
