IBM: Data breach costs jump in SE Asia

Southeast Asia Faces Record Data Breach Costs in 2026, IBM Study Reveals

Businesses across Southeast Asia incurred record-high costs from data breaches in 2026, averaging $4.12 million per incident a 12% increase from 2025’s $3.67 million, according to IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report. The region ranked ninth among 16 surveyed countries and regions, with global breach costs also hitting a new peak of $4.99 million, led by the U.S. at $11.5 million per breach.

The surge in costs is partly driven by AI-powered cyberattacks, which have lowered the barrier for threat actors while accelerating the speed and scale of breaches. IBM Asean General Manager Catherine Lian noted that organizations now face longer breach investigations and steeper financial losses as a result.

The study, based on data from 26 organizations in the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, found that financial services firms bore the highest costs in the region ($6.53 million), followed by industrial ($5.99 million) and communications ($4.28 million) sectors. Globally, healthcare remained the most impacted industry, with average costs of $6.64 million.

To counter rising threats, Asean organizations are increasingly adopting AI and automation in cybersecurity. Those leveraging these tools reported lower breach costs ($3.66 million vs. $4.86 million) and faster containment (123 days quicker) than those without. Nearly 75% of regional businesses plan to boost investments in security tools and governance post-breach, while a separate Ponemon Institute study found 85% of organizations globally aware of AI-driven threats intend to increase security spending.

The report, conducted by the Ponemon Institute, analyzed 602 organizations across 16 countries and 17 industries.
