HopSkipDrive Settles $1.99M Class Action Over 2023 Data Breach
HopSkipDrive Inc. has agreed to a $1.99 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit stemming from a data breach that exposed the personal information of approximately 155,000 users. The incident, which occurred between May 31 and June 10, 2023, compromised sensitive data, including names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, and medical information.
Eligibility & Compensation
Individuals who received a breach notification from HopSkipDrive or an affiliated entity around November 14, 2023, may qualify for compensation. Eligible class members can claim:
- Two years of three-bureau credit monitoring with up to $1 million in identity theft insurance.
- Up to $5,000 for documented out-of-pocket losses (e.g., fraud-related expenses, credit freeze costs, or post-breach credit monitoring).
- Up to $125 for lost time (five hours at $25/hour).
- A pro rata cash payment, estimated at $100, with an additional $250 for California residents.
Settlement Process
Claims must be submitted online or via mail by April 14, 2026, using the Notice ID and Confirmation Code from the settlement notice. Approved payments and monitoring services will be distributed approximately 90 days after final court approval, expected following the May 19, 2026, hearing.
Fund Allocation
The $1.99 million settlement covers:
- $172,731 for administration costs.
- Up to $694,750 in attorneys’ fees.
- Up to $2,500 for each class representative.
- Remaining funds for claimant payouts and monitoring services.
HopSkipDrive denies wrongdoing but settled to avoid prolonged litigation. The breach was attributed to alleged failures in safeguarding user data.
