KillSec: 16-year-old Alleged KillSec Ransomware Group Leader Arrested, Servers Dismantled

International Law Enforcement Disrupts KillSec Ransomware Group, Arrests Three Suspects

A global operation involving authorities from nine countries has dismantled the KillSec ransomware group, leading to three arrests and the seizure of critical infrastructure. The group, active since 2024, is linked to nearly 1,000 ransomware incidents worldwide, targeting organizations through software vulnerabilities and poorly secured cloud environments.

The suspected main operator, a 16-year-old, is believed to have served as the group’s administrator, while a second suspect a developer who recently turned 18 was still a minor during some alleged offenses. A third individual, acting as a negotiator or affiliate, was also identified. KillSec employed double extortion tactics, stealing sensitive data and threatening public release unless ransom demands were met.

The operation, coordinated by Eurojust and Europol, included judicial and law enforcement agencies from Belgium, Finland, Germany, Greece, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. A joint investigation team, led by Belgium, Germany, Greece, and Romania, conducted eight searches across Spain, Greece, the UK, and Romania, seizing 110 TB of stolen data, five servers, and multiple domains used by the group.

Authorities are now analyzing seized evidence to identify additional victims and potential accomplices. The group had previously targeted healthcare IT environments, exploiting weak cloud configurations and unpatched systems to access sensitive records. The disruption highlights the risks posed by exposed cloud services and inadequate identity controls in ransomware attacks.
