Massive Data Leak Exposes 600,000 Lithuanian Records in Suspected State-Backed Cyberattack
Lithuanian authorities are investigating a major data breach involving over 600,000 entries from national registers, believed to be the work of a foreign state. The leak, disclosed by the General Prosecutor’s Office, primarily affected real estate and legal entity databases, accessed using compromised credentials from authorized institutions.
In response, officials implemented heightened cybersecurity measures, including suspending suspected user accounts and mandating credential updates. The head of the Centre of Registers, Adrijus Jusas, resigned following the incident.
While the prosecutor’s office did not name the suspected country, speculation points to Russia, given Lithuania’s status as a frequent target in Moscow’s hybrid warfare campaigns ranging from sabotage to influence operations. Opposition politician Laurynas Kasčiūnas suggested the breach may be a Russian intelligence operation, though no evidence was provided. Concerns have been raised that sensitive data, including addresses of intelligence officers, military personnel, and diplomats, may have been exposed, potentially enabling surveillance or coercion.
