Cuyahoga County residents who subscribe to ReadyNotify alerts are encouraged to change their passwords following a national data breach. Subscriber information may be compromised, including name, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. (Business Wire)
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cuyahoga County officials are urging residents to safeguard their personal information after a nationwide cybersecurity incident may have exposed data tied to the county’s ReadyNotify emergency alert system.
The breach affected CodeRED, an alert platform operated by Crisis24 that the county and local municipalities use to send out alerts about weather, emergencies or government news . The county’s Office of Emergency Management learned Tuesday that subscriber information may have been compromised.
Crisis24 has not disclosed the extent of the breach, but county officials stressed Wednesday that the system is not connected to any county IT networks and does not store any financial data, social security numbers or other sensitive information. It does, however, store the names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and the specific alert lists users subscribe to.
The county is now urging all ReadyNotify subscribers to take precautions by:
Changing their ReadyNotify account password
Changing passwords for any other accounts that use the same or a similar password
Enabling multi-factor authentication whenever possible
Monitoring bank and credit accounts for suspicious activity
